Dance for musicians by Vera Mantero for Materiais Diversos, 2016

Dance for musicians is a project by Materiais Diversos that puts into collaboration choreographers and brass bands in the creation of performances where musicians become the sole interpreters of a choreographic and musical work. Vera Mantero is the first invited choreographer, having as partners musician and composer António-Pedro and Sociedade Filarmónica Euterpe Meiaviense, a brass band from Torres Novas.
The project relates intimately with the relevance of the musical scene in the territory where Materiais Diversos operates, namely Torres Novas, where there are eight active brass bands and many other musical groups. Highlighting the associative DNA of brass bands in Portugal, the convenor and pedagogical part they play in the life of many communities, this project has collective and voluntary work, as well as the idea of breathing as regular activity from which our own life depends, as research topics. At a time when cultural life doesn’t stop “in spite of all”, revealing the resilience and creativity of artists, whether professionals or amateurs, to keep on playing, to keep on dancing, to keep on creating, could be faced as breathing.
